May also kicks off the 2011 Commuter Challenge that will continue through the end of July. This yearly event encourages commuters to try new ways of getting around.

To participate, Smart Trips members must make their way to work by walking, biking, carpooling or taking the bus at least once a week during the three-month challenge – that’s 12 times in all. You can also participate by working a compressed work week and logging the day you stay home, or logging the days you work at home.

After logging their commutes, participants will automatically be entered to win some incredible prizes, such as Amazon Kindles, iPod Nano MP3 players, a Knoxville stay-cation and a grand prize travel package courtesy of AAA Travel of East Tennessee. Participants who log their commutes during May also will have a chance to win one of four $100 gift cards.

Prizes and certificates will go to the top worksites, in five size categories, at the end of the challenge. The business with the highest total number of points will be the overall winner and will receive a pizza and cupcake party.
